K4K advises Scatec Solar on acquisition of SN Power in the Philippines

In collaboration with Wood Mackenzie, prepared hydro optimisation model to forecast value of stored water across energy and ancillary service markets in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) to support the client's successful bid for four hydro plants of Magat, Maris, Ambuklao and Binga, totalling some 633.5MW. EKON advises X-ELIO on renewables divestment in Spain

Mr. Kim Keats, as director at EKON, provided baseload price forecasts and realised prices to support sell-side of various renewable projects in Spain.  Today X-ELIO announced the sale of a 572MW portfolio of 16 PV plants in Spain to China Three Gorges.  (X-ELIO press release here.)

EKON advises F2i on acquisition of Renovalia in Spain

Mr. Kim Keats, as director at EKON, provided baseload price forecasts and realised prices to support buy-side of various renewable projects in Spain. Today, F2i Fondi italiani per le infrastrutture ("F2i") announced the completion of its acquisition of Spanish solar energy company Renovalia from an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. (“Cerberus”). The agreement was signed and announced in December 2019. The acquisition, made by the fund's EF Solare subsidiary, includes 102MW of operational projects and another 879MW from authorised projects currently being developed. (F2i press release here).​

K4K supports successful Masdar-EDFR-Nesma consortium on NREP Round 2 PV bids in Saudi Arabia

The consortium composed of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company ("Masdar"), EDF Renewables ("EDFR") and NEMSA Holding Company ("Nesma") participated in Round 2 of Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Program ("NREP") managed by the Renewable Energy Project Development Office ("REPDO") of the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources ("MEIM").  In support of their bid preparation, K4K prepared the post-PPA assessments of the 600MWac Al-Faisaliah, 300MWac South Jeddah, 300MWac Rabigh, and 200MWac Qurrayat solar PV Independent Power Projects ("IPPs").  After a competitive bid process, the client was awarded the South Jeddah project.  The 25-year PPA was signed in January 2021 and achieved financial close on 12 April 2021.  (See announcement of auction results and financial close.)

IEB's Master in International Finance again first in class

The guide to the 250 best masters in Spain was published by El Mundo newspaper.  Amongst thousands of options, the guide selects the best 250, grouping them into 50 specialties. In the classification of Economy, in the area of Finance, the IEB’s Master in International Finance came first, adding that "taught entirely in English, the syllabus includes three compulsory stays in America, Europe, and Asia allowing students to obtain a certification from each school they attend".  Katia has been the sub-director of this master since 2010.

Hoy se publicó la guía de los 250 mejores másteres nacionales en El Mundo con el objetivo de ayudar en la elección del máster universitario más adecuado según las necesidades y preferencias de cada persona.  Entre más de un millar de opciones, esta guía selecciona los 250 mejores másteres, agrupados en 50 especialidades. K4K prepared the post-PPA assessment of the 400MW wind power project in Dumat Al Jandal in the Al Jouf region of Saudi Arabia.  After a competitive bid process, the consortium was awarded the project in January 2019. (Masdar's press release link.)

EKON supports Cobra in sale of La Mula PV in Spain

Mr. Kim Keats, as director at EKON, prepared baseload price forecasts and realised prices to support sale of the 500MW La Mula PV project in Murcia, Spain by Cobra Concesiones ("Cobra") to Northleaf Capital Partners (Canada) Ltd (“Northleaf”). The deal was executed in October 2018.

K4K supports IPO of Dhofar Generating Company in Oman

Prepared long-term electricity dispatch and capacity expansion analysis to allow potential IPO investors to take a view on the residual cash flows of the Salalah 2 IPP project consisting of the recently commissioned 445MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine and the existing 273MW Raysut Open Cycle Gas Turbine power plants.  Since the contractual framework is similar to those used in other IPPs based around a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (“PPA”), in this case ending in March 2033, and since the project can be expected to have an operational lifetime of more than 30 years, the analysis highlighted the potential revenue stream post-PPA revenue stream.  The IPO Prospectus can be accessed from here.  The IPO, which closed in August 2018, raised OMR20 million (USD52 million) was oversubscribed 1.37x.

K4K supports consortium on successful bid for Aseelah IWP in Oman

JGC Corporation and United Infrastructure Development Company were bidding for new 17.6MIGD Salt Water Reverse Osmosis (“SWRO”) Independent Water Project ("IWP") plant in Sharqiyah to supply desalinated water under a long-term Water Purchase Agreement (“WPA“) to Oman Power & Water Company ("OPWP").  Since the WPA was designed to penalise the project in cases where it was unavailable, K4K prepared an independent study of the water plant’s power outage risks.  Provided a long-term supply-demand outlook and collected statistics on the operation of the transmission grid by Oman Electricity Transmission Company (“OETC”) and distribution grid by Mazoon Electricity Company (“MZEC”) to demonstrate that the project would be no more likely to suffer outages than other Omani IWPs.  The client was awarded the project by OPWP on 25 July 2018.

K4K supports ACWA in successful bid for Umm Al Quwain IWP in UAE

ACWA Power was bidding for a new 45MIGD Salt Water Reverse Osmosis (“SWRO”) Independent Water Project ("IWP") plant to supply desalinated water under a long-term Water Purchase Agreement (“WPA“) to the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (“FEWA”).  Historically, FEWA has relied on the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company (“ADWEC”) to supply both water and power but the latter will be running short of water capacity in the medium term.  K4K supported the bidder by preparing an analysis that showed how the project would help FEWA meet the demand for water whilst still relying on supply of power from ADWEC given its expected capacity expansion plan.  After a competitive bid process, ACWA was awarded the project today.

K4K supports sale of TOTAL's minority shareholding in CCGT in Thailand

In collaboration with AWR Lloyd, K4K prepared a post-PPA analysis for the 350MW Bang Bo Independent Power Producer (“IPP”) operated by Eastern Power and Electric Co. Ltd (“EPEC”).  The existing offtake agreement with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (“EGAT”) centres around a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (“PPA”) on a Build Own Operate ("BOO") basis that expires in 2023.  Since the project could have a useful life in excess of this, the client wanted to understand the post-PPA value of the project. Results formed part of the Information Memorandum. The sale to Tokyo Gas closed on 3 October 2016.

K4K launches new web site

With the expansion into power and water advisory services, K4K launches a web site today providing an overview of the lines of services and the main partners in the firm.  Mrs. Katia Velasco-Anton is a seasoned financial tutor whilst Mr. Kim Keats-Martínez has many years of experience in the analysis of power and water desalination markets.  The husband and wife team will be based in Madrid but will maintain a pied-à-terre in London.

Kim to develop K4K's power and water advisory services

After some 20 years in economic consultancy, Mr Kim Keats-Martínez joins his wife as a Director in K4K.  Kim will be based in Madrid from where he will continue to develop and provide his brand of market advisory and modelling services.  He began work as an analyst in London Economics in 1995.  He moved to their electricity team in 1998 and began to focus on supporting the due diligence of developers, sponsors and lenders.  In 2000, he joined the new office of ICF International in London and developed their European power and fuels practice.  In 2007, he joined IPA Energy + Water Economics and established a successful international power and desalinated water transactions advisory team.  Kim says, "This is an exciting time.  Rapidly growing countries need capital investment to meet rising demand for electricity and water whilst more mature economies face the challenge of limiting CO2 emissions, accommodating renewables and replacing aging infrastructure.  Existing and new players will welcome independent advice on asset deployment and valuation."  K4K will be geared to support its clients meet these interesting challenges.
